Don't Look Now, Our New Head Coach Is Here!

|

Jessie Schutte Brooks (EDUC ’44):

In the early 1940s, Pitt football saw many players and coaches drafted into the military. It was World War II—and things looked grim. It was rumored in The Pittsburgh Press that the famous Clark Shaughnessy had been contacted about the head coach position. One morning back then, a classmate and I squeezed into an already crowded elevator to go up to our classes. Behind us stood Athletic Director Jimmy Hagan and a taller man. I was certain it was Clark Shaughnessy. I whispered to my friend, “Don’t look know, but our new head coach is here!” Everyone heard me. I glanced back and saw the two gentlemen smiling at me, and the rest is history.
