The Big Picture at Today's Pitt

An Educator That's Also a Job Creator

|

Pitt supports tens of thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania, directly and indirectly.

The University employs more than 11,000 full- and part-time staff at its Pittsburgh campus alone, with Pitt employees’ personal income totaling nearly $600 million.

In addition, Pitt research supports more than 28,800 jobs, based on a U.S. Department of Commerce formula that every $1 million in research spending generates 36 jobs. Pitt attracted more than $800 million in research grants to Western Pennsylvania in 2011.

During fiscal year 2009, the most recent year for which data are available, Pitt also indirectly created 19,140 local jobs, generating an additional $587 million in income for those workers.

Pitt’s presence creates a need for additional employees in government and service facilities, too. More than 2,000 jobs in local government and public schools can be attributed to Pitt, with associated personal income of nearly $90 million.

While it’s harder to measure, Pitt also “essentially connects students to the jobs and industries that will shape the future and play a vital role in the continued resurgence of the Pittsburgh region,” as Jared L. Cohon, president of neighboring Carnegie Mellon University, told Pennsylvania lawmakers in 2011.
