Research Powerhouses, Working Together

Other cities host more than one research university. But only in Pittsburgh are two such institutions literally footsteps apart: Pitt and Carnegie Mellon University.

"If you think of Oakland as sort of one campus, there are very few if any peer campuses in the world—maybe Harvard and MIT," said Don Smith, president of the Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania, in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette interview.

The large and growing number of Pitt-Carnegie Mellon collaborations includes the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, the Quality of Life Technology Center, and the Science of Learning Institute, among others. In 2005, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon joined with West Virginia University, Penn State, and Virginia Tech on a joint project with the U.S. Department of Energy to further research into energy and environmental technology.
