Lights, Camera, Academics

Pitt students don’t have to go to Hollywood to learn about film. Pitt’s Film Studies Program and Pitt in Hollywood organization cover practical as well as academic aspects of filmmaking.

Among Film Studies’ distinguished faculty members are Lucy Fischer, author of nine books on film and an expert on women's cinema; Carl Kurlander, a Pitt visiting distinguished senior lecturer, Hollywood screenwriter, and television writer-producer, who returned to his native Pittsburgh following a 20-year career in Hollywood; Marcia Landy, a prolific author and authority on Italian film; and Colin MacCabe, whose areas of expertise include the work of French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.

Kurlander also is faculty advisor for Pitt in Hollywood, a student-run organization that encourages and supports interaction between the entertainment industry and Pittsburgh’s higher-education community. The group has been instrumental in hosting presentations on campus by Pitt alumni who work in movies and TV.
