Students Learn Outside the Classroom

|

“Being deeply involved in these organizations and activities has enabled me to grow significantly as a leader and become an active member of the University,” says Pitt student Ali Malinari.

Malinari, a political science and economics major, is talking about Pitt’s Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC). “OCC has enabled me to learn new things and have a diverse background that will help in the real world,” she says. Read about OCC in the Pitt Chronicle.

Launched in 2008 by Pitt’s Division of Student Affairs, OCC encourages students to join clubs, serve in peer mentor programs, write resumes, and assist with fundraising for the arts. It’s already become an integral part of student life. Watch students talk about their OCC experiences.

Designed to “educate the whole student,” OCC includes programs, activities, and experiences that complement students' academic studies. Students earn OCC credits, and participation in the program is documented on students' academic transcripts. Visit the OCC Web site.

The brainchild of Kathy W. Humphrey, Pitt vice provost and dean of students, and led by Shawn Brooks, OCC focuses on 10 key areas: leadership development, service to others, global and cultural awareness, career preparation, development of a sense of self, communication skills, demonstration of initiative and drive, appreciation of the arts, wellness, and Pitt pride. Read about OCC in Outside the Classroom Magazine.
