101 Years of Striking Up the Pitt Band

|

“When I think back to my days in the Pitt Band, I remember a student organization that was filled with pride and spirit and proudly represented the University,” says emeritus trustee J. Roger Glunt.

“I also fondly remember the formation of the Pitt Herald Trumpets in 1959 and the many fanfares we performed to announce significant University and community events.

“We band members received exceptional leadership from our director, Robert L. Arthur, who demanded discipline, musical excellence, and precision marching. Mr. Arthur taught us that we had unique opportunities to represent a great university. One of those opportunities occurred in 1958, when our band provided an escort into Fort Ligonier for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.”

Speaking for generations of University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band members, Glunt—president of Glunt Development Co., Inc., chair of Pitt's Chancellor's Circle, and a former president of the Pitt Alumni Association—affirms: “I learned many of my life’s very important lessons from the Pitt Band.”
